02 Jun Dear Texas Gov. Abbott: Never Say Never to Medical Marijuana
Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law a bill allowing epilepsy patients to use medicinal oils containing a therapeutic component found in marijuana. Could this be the toe in the water for legal medical marijuana use in Texas?
Not as long as Abbott is governor, he vows. How disappointing.
If you had asked me at the start of the session whether this bill had a chance, I would have said “no.” Texas and 15 other states have archaic laws to prohibit both medicinal and recreational use.
While I’m of mixed mind on whether to legalize or decriminalize recreational use of marijuana, I strongly favor legitimate efforts to find medicinal uses for the plant or its key ingredients. So does the majority of the Dallas Morning News editorial board, which supported the bill Abbott just signed. I’d just like a smarter discussion about the broader use of marijuana for medical purposes that doesn’t get bogged down in drug policy politics. Science is about finding cures and treatments from unlikely sources. [Read more from Jim Mitchell at the Dallas Morning News]
