18 Nov Absorb Your CBD in a Cup of ViPova Tea
Smoking might be the most efficient way to receive the health benefits of cannabis, but it is not necessarily the best option for all consumers. Smoke can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, and nonsmokers may be reluctant to start, even if they are interested in the medicinal benefits of marijuana. Although attitudes towards medical and recreational cannabis use are changing, some potential consumers may still be concerned about the stigma of smoking and prefer products closer to mainstream medicine.
Edible and drinkable cannabis products have been developed to expand the legal cannabis market and reach potential customers who may not be interested in smoking or vaping. With edible and drinkable cannabis, there’s no equipment to buy or need for set up—the product can be consumed as easily as pulling open a wrapper or cracking open a can of soda. The latest industry sales data is showing that edibles have displaced flower as the number one selling category in the cannabis sector. Currently available products include candies, sodas, and teas with and without THC.
THC and CBD are two of the over 489 compounds found in cannabis. THC, a psychoactive compound, is what produces the high when cannabis is consumed. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a high and can even counteract some of the effects of THC, making it a natural choice for consumers who want to receive the health benefits of cannabis without experiencing the psychoactive effects.
Although CBD-only products are now widely available, the vast majority of ingested CBD is not absorbed by the body. Edible ingestion typically has a 5% cannabinoid absorption rate, significantly less than the 30% cannabinoid absorption rate of smoking, but not everyone is settling for this low absorption rate.
Lexaria (OTCQB: LXRP), a food sciences company focused on food products derived from legal full spectrum bio-availability enhanced hemp oil, has worked to find a more effective form of CBD-infusion for its line of ViPova teas. Through technology developed specifically to enhance human absorption of delicate molecules, Lexaria has been able to achieve an absorption rate 499% higher than controls, which is almost on par with smoking or vaping cannabis. As part of its commitment to create products that bring peace, comfort, and wellness to its customers’ lives, ViPova has combined cutting edge technology with a popular but ancient beverage: tea.
“ViPova teas are traditional teas: black, green and rooibos teas that are combined with cannabidiol sourced from hemp oil, and manufactured using a patent-pending technology proven to deliver up to 499% higher absorption rates,” said Chris Bunka, CEO of Lexaria. To achieve this higher absorption rate, ViPova infuses CBD into fatty acids, also known as lipids. ViPova teas pair sunflower oil with the ingredients extracted from hemp oil.
“We know that most absorption is happening in the small intestine. And we believe that our patent pending process envelopes the CBD molecule within a protective lipid layer—a tiny ‘bubble of fat’—which the intestine recognizes and absorbs efficiently as it is designed to do with lipids,” Bunka explained. It is this bubble that allows additional CBD to be absorbed rather than lost during the digestion process.
Not only do cannabinoids like CBD provide a range of health benefits, but tea itself has been used as a natural remedy for centuries. Teas have been shown to reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms of arthritis, ulcerative colitis and other chronic conditions. Studies have also shown that black tea and green tea can reduce the risks of certain cancers and improve heart health. Rooibos, sometimes called “red tea,” has many of the same properties as green and black tea, but is naturally caffeine free.
A cup of tea can also be a way to relax and reduce stress, adding to overall health and wellness. Blending the existing healthful properties of tea with ViPova’s new CBD technology means this product could be twice as effective at managing chronic inflammation and preventing future illness.
ViPova currently offers Earl Grey and English Breakfast as well as blends of chai tea and green tea so that tea drinkers can enjoy their favorites, also in decaffeinated versions, while experiencing the benefits of CBD. There is even a recipe for iced tea on the ViPova website for those who would like to have their CBD-infused tea on a hot summer day.
ViPova’s line of drinkable CBD is currently expanding, with CBD-infused hot chocolate and coffee being prepared for market. Lexaria has also released a hemp oil infused protein bar. ViPova is available for sale in stores in some states and also online, while the company is also working to bring its products to the United Kingdom, a country known for its love and appreciation of tea.
